Nitric oxide and Anodyne Therapy

Nitric oxide (NO), was initially identified by Dr. Salvador Moncada and was later awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1998. This molecule is produced by most of the cells of the nerves, muscles, bones, red blood cells and endothelium that lines the inner surface of blood vessels. NO plays an important role in the relaxation of smooth muscle through the dilation of blood vessels, and is crucial in the regulation of organs and tissues. As our blood carries oxygen, food and vitamins that are essential to the growth of tissues, if flow decreases, as in diabetes, the soft tissues and organs will suffer changes. This often results in a loss of sensation and balance and gait issues – which can trigger falls. Wounds proliferate and are sometimes very difficult to heal (as they are depleted of nutrients oxygen and growth factors), unless the microcirculatory blood flow can be restored.

What is the biomechanism which releases Nitric Oxide once exposed to infrared light?

Nitric oxide is chemically bonded to the sulfur atoms (S). This connection is called a nitrosothiol. There are several amino acids that have sulfur atoms as part of its structure and can therefore “grab” the Nitric Oxide (NO), as long as it is available. One of these amino acids, cysteine, is found in the protein in red blood cells (hemoglobin).

With exposure to infrared light, the link between Nitric Oxide (NO) and Sulfur (S) is "broken" and gas (NO) is released. The infrared light at a wavelength of 890 nm can break this link because the kinetic energy of the photons of light is higher than the one that "grabs" Sulfur (S) and Nitric Oxide (NO) together in a nitrosothiol. Hydrogen ions then replace the nitric oxide released from the sulfur atom.

This gas then diffuses and is eventually captured by the guanylyl cyclase (GC), the enzyme existing within the smooth muscle cells. Once activated by nitric oxide the guanylyl cyclase then forms GMP from the GTP. The cGMP through another enzyme, puts phosphate in the smooth muscle proteins causing its relaxation. This leads to blood vessel dilation and improved blood flow. When proteins of smooth muscle cells that form the outer wall of the blood vessel are phosphoryzed, the vessel relaxes its diameter increases by improving the local blood flow and the provides nutrients to the cells in the area.

Vasodilation, angiogenesis, neurotransmission, analgesic effect.

Nitric oxide released by the infrared light emitted from the Anodyne Therapy System is the determining factor in the restoration of blood flow and sensation, the reversal of pain, the healing of wounds and ulcers or reversal of necrosis. NO also plays a direct role in pain relief, as it has been shown to mediate the analgesic effects of morphine. In addition, Anodyne Therapy helps to indirectly reduce pain by improving blood flow – reducing ischemic pain. NO is also necessary for cell proliferation including the muscle and skin and, especially, the the growth of new blood vessels. NO is responsible for the angiogenesis of the vascular endothelial growth factor.

After evaluating all the attributes of medical devices with infrared light, the question you can ask yourself is, if in fact the specifications of this infrared light therapy device will produce the clinical effects that you want in your practice.

Taking into account the specifications listed in the Compendium of Clinical Evidence submitted, and approved in Europe, to obtain the CE Mark (available to health professionals), the study and testimonials of patient volunteers, ask yourself the following questions:

Can I get the effects I want in my clinical practice?

Will my patients stop feeling pain or it will be so reduced that they will have a better quality of life?

Will they sleep through the night as stated in the testimonials?

Will they recover sensitivity?

Will their ulcers heal?

Is it really possible to save a foot or a leg of amputation? Does the phantom pain disappear?

And the elderly? One published clinical study on Anodyne Therapy shows a 96% reduction in falls by increasing sensitivity and proprioception - and an overall reduction in pain

And in sports medicine? Is it really possible to reduce pain and recovery time of the athlete?

It even improves the situations of herpes, surgical dehiscence and promotes healing of fractures and injuries?

Anodyne Therapy has performed extensive research to evaluate the combinations of wavelength and energy of specific appropriate treatment protocol. It is with these proven protocols that there have been 13 peer reviewed studies published on the efficacy of Anodyne Therapy Systems.

With the security that the CE Mark approval gives Anodyne Therapy, we invite you to become familiar with the clinical benefits that Anodyne Therapy can provide to your practice or your patients.
